Isla de Aves, also known as Bird Island, is a small Caribbean island located approximately 120 miles west of the Venezuelan mainland. It is technically a dependency of Venezuela, but its ownership has been disputed by nearby countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the Dominican Republic. The island is only about 650 meters long and 200 meters wide, and it is comprised almost entirely of coral and limestone. It is home to a variety of seabirds and migratory birds, but no permanent human population. Due to its location and the surrounding waters, Isla de Aves has been used for smuggling drugs, weapons, and other illicit goods. However, the island is officially designated as a nature reserve, making it illegal to disturb the birds or their habitat.
